Visiting old friends and catching up over nibbles and drinks.

Reasons to be Cheerful
Watched lots of real sport in the sun, the under 16 England team were playing at a school nearby.  It was amazing to watch, they were all over 6 feet four and men not boys and played with such passion.  We hear so much negative stuff about the younger generation, to watch such dedication was inspiring.
Then I watched two hours cricket eating cake and drinking tea in the sun, it was a perfect English country day.
The weekend had been perfect, more like a mini holiday than a break from work.

Yesterday's Reasons to be Cheerful

2. Spent an hour window shopping in Westbourne Grove, my favourite part of London
3. The hunter returned home after a long and stressful business trip, with bad jet lag and in need of TLC, reverted to a cuddly 5 year old who just wanted affection, comfort food and lots of sleep. It was nice to feel all housewifely and nurturing.

Daily Diet Update and Reasons to be Cheerful

Today current weight: not sure (forgot to weigh in at gym, this is becoming a habit, must try to have some trace of a memory of diet in my consciousness at some point in the day, and if not at the gym when?!)
Yesterday Exercise; 1 hour hardcore aerobics, 3 x 20 min dog walk
Yesterday Food intake;
Breakfast; coffee, orange, 2 egg omelette
Mid morning snack; coffee, banana, almonds
Lunch; steak casserole on bed of spinach and mint
Afternoon; tea and fruit cake
Dinner; steak casserole and peas, cashew nuts, walnuts and raisins
Evening snack; milky decaff coffee

The exercise class was a really hard one, I normally have to stop in parts, but I did the whole thing until all my muscles burnt.  I am wondering if it is a combination of eating a lot more food than usual over the previous days and the 'steak stew' which I rather over catered and as I can't bear waste, will eat until it is gone.  Either way, my intensity and endurance was markedly more than usual.  Added to this, I did not feel the post exercise total exhaustion, rather was full of energy to tackle the tasks of the day.

Today is so beautiful, that I thought I might add a daily record of 3 reasons to be cheerful as well as my diet, which seems to suggest deprivation, although there hasn't been much of that recently!

There are the 'big' things that I thank God for daily, which I will list today, but each day there are really small, almost imperceptible positive things that happen and when they accumulate, can surround us in a warm glow.
The biggies;
1. That everyone I love is healthy, recently some of my friends have been through terrible time with ones that they love, it is worse than when it is personal, I give daily thanks that I am unbelievably lucky to not have a single major illness amongst those that I care about.
2. That I am healthy, we often glibly refer to this when everything else is terrible, but having spent a day at a breast clinic after a recent scare, it was a humbling experience and I will never take health forgranted again.
3. That I have people to love and I am loved.  This gives me security and I crave it more than anything else.
4. That I can eat good food daily, yes, I budget and I am too mean to buy my mountains of vegetables and fruit anywhere other than the market.  But I am still lucky enough to eat whatever I want each day.
5. That I have a home that is warm and cosy and is my sanctuary, it may be small, but it is all that I need and when I come home it is like being in an embrace.
6. That I have friends that I see every day, friends who do not judge, envy, compete or gossip (in a nasty way) only in a really funny interesting way!  We are all completely different in age and lifestyle, but each is happy with who they are and accepts the others for who they are without any need to impose their views or opinions on the others.

These are the things that I couldn't live without and am thankful for every day of my life.

The three small things that made me cheerful today....
1. I watched a virtuous circle occur; I was let out in traffic, I stopped to allow a car to turn into the road into which I was going, they in turn stopped for the next car coming out of a side road, who in turn slowed down to let bikes come through a narrow side road.  Imagine how safe the roads would be if everyone drove like this!
2. The sun shone all day, it was cold, only one or 2 degrees, but the sunshine masked the chill and made everything beautiful.
3.The normally shy horses came to see me while I walked the dog and stood for ages letting me pet them.

What are you thankful for today?

Daily diet update

Today current weight: Not sure
Yesterday Exercise; 2 hours leisurely dog walking
Yesterday Food intake;
Breakfast; muffin top, dehydrated greens and mango juice, coffee (all coffees macchiato)
Mid morning snack; none
Lunch; strips of chicken on bed of lettuce, with pieces of cheese, cranberry and red grapes with raspberry vinegar and oil dressing. Pudding; chocolate yoghurt ice cream and two squares of a brownies
Afternoon; cup of tea and carrot cake and scone with cream, 2 small sandwiches with turkey and ham
Dinner; dehydrated greens, two bowls of homemade soup (made with stock from roast chicken and chopped  leeks, carrots and peas)
Evening snack; camomile and honey tea
I made these unappetising banana muffins for breakfast and picked the crispy tops off a couple of them (why are the crusty bits the most tempting?!)
Unfortunately the combination of wheat and sugar is never a good way to start the day and I was famished from then on.
This was compounded with waiting too long for lunch and eating not enough protein so that it barely touched the side.  I needed more sugar like a woman possessed and after the frozen yoghurt, was looking forward to my next hit.  I knew the evening would be one of constant grazing, so I tried to rebalance with some dehydrated greens. This did the trick and the soup satisfied with out thought of further calories.

Can a fat girl slim? Part 3 common sense

Diet talk can get a little dull, but I read an interesting piece in today's Times, which sums up my approach to weight loss and maintenance.  A full and  more detailed report on the same piece is  in the New York Times
To summarise; despite sticking resolutely to a diet, weight will always stop coming off or may even start to gain.  This is due to the remarkable ability of the body to adapt to survive, it will evolve to survive in the new conditions therefore all diets will ultimately fail.
The main reason, I think, that my diet/regime has succeeded, is that I surprise my body daily, so it is never quite sure what it is going to get and I never eat less than every four hours and less than 1200 calories (that's a guess as I don't count calories at all).  I deliberately have days when I have 'treats' like huge slices of chocolate fudge cake (yesterday) and eat plentifully and with enjoyment.  It is a bit like interval training, even when you slow down you still go at a pace, so that you never fall into the feast and famine trap which really destroys the metabolism.

Breakfast has always been a challenge, it is just about the only time of day that I don't want to eat.  With my new regime I have been trying to eat eggs on toast, but can't stomach it.  To kick start the metabolism we need something that is wholesome and calorific (to fool the body into thinking it is a 'normal' day).  I eat about 100 grams of sunflower seeds, which I have just read on the side of the packet is 500 calories! I had no idea! But the calories really don't seem to matter.  It gives me the energy to get out, walk the dog and then exercise like a loony for an hour at the gym.

Lunch tends to be a huge amount, but relatively lo cal, so I fry up (with very little fat) meat, onions, leeks, cabbage, carrots, whatever is around, and dress it with a dab of mayo and liberal amounts of Worcester sauce.  The frying pan is full and I eat the whole lot.  I have a HUGE appetite, which is why I got so big on 'normal' food.  I am now resigned to the fact, and rather than pick miserably at lettuce leaves, I have adapted my buying/eating habits to reflect the truth.
In the afternoon I have tea and a small bar of Green and Black's chocolate (on a 'good' day), but on a day off, I have cake or biscuits or similar.
The evening meal tends to be fairly small, a piece of meat and some salad and veg and brown rice.  I am rarely hungry (as long as I have eaten in the morning, if not, I am ravenous and would eat the sofa).  To satisfy the 'fancy' something craving,  I have a camomile, vanilla and honey tea by Twinings which is delicious and zero calories, I have managed to 'train' myself into believing that it is a treat by always drinking it and doing something relaxing, looking at blogs, reading books, listening to music that I love etc.

My only 'rules' on diet days are; nothing premade and prepacked, no wheat, very little pure (white) sugar, no dairy, nothing overly reliant on chemicals for taste or its existence.
On non diet days, because I haven't really restricted anything, there is no feeling of a need to 'blow out', it just means it's OK to have the huge slice of cake or join in with the rounds of cocktails.
It is a misnomer to label my regime as a 'diet' which might indicate a short term measure, it has to be forever, with a mix of strict days and free days.  The ration is about 3:1, but the 'free' days are important in order to not fully adapt.  It is like a maestro playing a concerto, the magic is often in the pauses.
Today's piece explains why, despite consuming, what appears to be rather a lot of food, I have lost more weight and successfully kept it off than my days when I starved all day, ate nothing but cocktail nibbles, exercised continually, was always hungry and was still the size of a house.
The worst thing is that this new study proves that in order to lose weight you need to eat less calories than you consumed putting the weight on.  Ie if you added on 250 calories when you put on weight, you will now have to take off 500 calories to lose the same amount, so the real lesson is don't put on weight in the first place!

Can a fat girl slim? part two for the love of veg

In my teens I couldn't eat meat, it was partly principle, the discovery and comprehension of the correlation between sweet little lambs, piggies and calves and cutlets, sausages and veal, and partly that I just went off the taste.  The down side is that my stomach became a bottomless pit which could accommodate mountains of carbs and in turn I became a mountain of a girl.
In my twenties and thirties I tried meat and sea food rich diets, but they just left my exhausted all the time (and constipated) all the time.
By my late thirties and forties I rediscovered vegetables, salads and fruits of all varieties, and, along with a little meat, they seem to have been the source of my weight loss.  The sad thing is that it has been so easy, with not a hunger pang in sight, I try not to think of all the year's that I wasted trudging around after my skinny friends, too embarrassed to try on clothes when we were out shopping, knowing that if I was lucky I might squeeze into a sixteen, and those were the humiliating days when changing rooms were communal.
It's difficult to get excited about vegetables, the way that they are presented in a supermarket.  My inner conspiracy theorist is convinced it's because if we were all passionate about vegetables, there would be no need for any ready meals or junk food.  I buy mine from this fabulous market, where you can touch and smell everything and there is a long discussion as to the relative merits of the Spanish or Canary Island lettuces, the local cabbages and the eternal orange vs blood orange debate.

I have never been much of a cook, but just smelling the coriander and the ginger, or the thyme and the mushrooms and it is obvious how well they complement each other, and the meat suits the vegetables, it needs to be delicate for the coriander and ginger, but can be stronger for the thyme and mushrooms, but is only a supporting role to all of the other flavours. I am learning as I go, but wouldn't be if I bought everything prepacked from the supermarket.

From a child I have been fascinated by these 16th Century paintings by Arcimboldo, these are Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter and the gardener is the last one.

He didn't have much success while he lived, and his work was considered a bit of a joke, but I could look at these for hours, with hindsight, it was like he knew what we all need, after all, we are what we eat!

Can a fat girl slim?

Until the age of 25, I was fat, gargantuan, over six feet tall in heels with a cup size that flowed over an E cup and into an F and beyond.  At 15 stone, I tried every diet over a decade; the Cambrige Diet, Slim Fast, Cabbage Soup, the Palm Beach Diet, the French Stick diet, the Jockey Diet, Herbalife, the Carrot Diet, the Eat Your Fill Toffees (pure Harry Potter, eat two magic toffees and you will be unable to eat your meal).  The list goes on and on.
These diets all shared a similar pattern; a couple of days success because of that illusive promise of magical weightloss, a couple of days of youthful determination overcoming the hunger pains, a couple of days of maintenance as the intitial water and muscle loss showed on the scales.  And then by the end of the week, disaster, and a ravenous hunger that overtook all reason so that in 30 minutes flat I could eat everything in the fridge/bread bin/ biscuit tin.
By my twenties life was more interesting and food lost its mystique, I ate very little and exercised daily, but my weight stuck resolutely around 11 stone.
In my 30s  I ate more, better quality food, stopped the exercise and my weight maintained a range of 10- 10 and a half stone.
In my forties my life has changed completely and I have both the time and inclination to focus on getting into the best possible shape.  It has been an interesting learning experience and to date fairly successful.
I started by building up a proper, structured fitness routine; Monday-Friday work outs a mix of weights, aerobic, stretch, core training, tennis and swimming.  I do a mix of these for a minimum of one hour each day and if possible at least twice a week two hours.
Initially my muscles were exhausted after years of inactivity and the only way that it was maintainable was by alternating aerobic/muscle building days with stretch days.
This has completely changed my body shape, in my twenties, when I did exercise, I had bulky legs and shoulders, a thick waist and fat on my torso regardless of the hours and hours that I put in on the aerobics floor. By focusing on the stretch as well as the strength training I have a longer waist, less body fat and less bulk around my back and shoulders.
I have lost around a stone and a half without feeling any deprivation or hunger.  My jeans are getting looser, although the scales are starting to go up, but I am not really interested in the weight other than as a general guide.  My diet it quite specific, but this is going on a bit so more later.

Some celebs who you could never imagine getting fat.....

Michelle Pfeiffer is still beautiful, that bone structure....
